Costa is running an innovative trial to understand consumer sentiment towards avocados with lasered images on the skin surface.
The goal ultimately is to replace fruit stickers, which are not recyclable or compostable, with laser etched bar codes.
During the trial Costa’s Lovacados with etched Easter characters will appear in 20 Victorian stores during April. Consumers will be asked to provide their feedback to the laser application, by scanning a QR code.
Laser is a natural light (no chemicals, no ink) which lifts the top layer of the skin surface and does not impact the flesh of the avocado.
If the consumer feedback is positive, Costa is aiming to move to a type of bar code which will be lasered onto the surface, eliminating the need for the fruit stickers.
