From picking raspberries as a backpacker to a glob

From picking raspberries as a backpacker to a global HR role for Costa Group’s international berry business, Sarah Miles is evidence of the opportunities available in the agricultural industry.
Originally from the United Kingdom, Sarah came to Coffs Harbour to complete her 88 days of farm work to get a second-year visa. She joined the Costa team at Corindi and hasn’t looked back.

After a period picking fruit, Sarah had left to continue her travels when she received a call from Costa offering her a new position which drew on her previous experience in the HR sector.

She progressed through Costa’s Berry HR team, working as the National HR Manager for the Berry Domestic Category before moving into her current role of Divisional Head of HR for the Berry International team, covering operations in Morocco, China and Laos.

She has also recently completed her Master of Business Administration through the University of New England with support from Costa’s study assistance program.

“Moving from the domestic operations into the international business has given me the opportunity to work in a completely different environment. It’s a great chance to expand my experience and I am appreciative of the confidence shown in me to take on this role,” she
said.

“Throughout my career with Costa I have been encouraged to get involved in the things that interest me. It’s a little like choosing your own adventure. My experience is that our leaders are open to people having a go,” she said.

“There’s something really unique in being able to work in a business of this size and complexity, while living in the regional communities where we operate. There are so many experts working across this business, it’s really exciting.”

After completing a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Communications, majoring in Human Recourse Management and Advertising, Amirah Said was drawn to the Costa Graduate Program as she wanted to gain hands-on experience in the HR world.

A career in horticulture has opened a world of opportunity for Woolgoolga local Melissa Mullee.
After graduating from the University of New England with a Bachelor of Agriculture, Melissa joined Costa’s berry business, beginning a career that has now spanned 14 years. In her horticulture roles with Costa, Melissa has travelled to countries including the United States, Mexico, Thailand, China, Laos, Morocco, the Netherlands and England.
“The reason I have stayed for so long is that there has always been progression and the opportunity to do different things and work with different people,” she said. Her experience highlights one of the industry’s key economic strengths: the ability to attract, train and retain a skilled workforce in a regional area, while creating opportunities for advancement in agronomy, operations and international management.
After working at Costa’s Corindi berry farm and then Far North Queensland for several years, Mel moved back to the Woolgoolga region to take up a position with Costa’s Berries International team, as the Regional Horticulture Manager for Asia and New Territories.
“I have had the most amazing opportunities travelling to different countries. I have been involved in setting up trials and new farms.”
Melissa said she did not initially realise the long-term opportunities the industry could provide, particularly the chance to build an international career while ultimately returning home to live and work on the Coffs Coast.
Aside from her professional success, Melissa also met her husband while working at the FNQ berry farm. He started as a backpacker in operations and is now the planting manager at Corindi.
Mel said the passion and commitment of the people working in the farms was inspiring. “We have technical staff here who have worked here for 20-30 years and there’s plenty of opportunity for people who work hard and are committed.”

What started as a gap-year job in the Tasmanian Co

What started as a gap-year job in the Tasmanian Costa berry harvest has turned into a long-term career, taking Henry Scott to Corindi in New South Wales, Far North Queensland and now China for a three-year posting.

Henry began working for Costa Berries during a gap year working in field quality roles then coaching for those roles, before moving into harvest coordinating, planning and forecasting and then into field leadership.

In 2025, after considering his career prospects he was offered an opportunity to take up a posting in China, working in the Operations, Improvement and Innovation team.

“Moving here has been better than what I thought it would be. The operation here is massive and the people who work here have such passion for the work they do.” Henry said.

“I’m excited about how I can contribute to such a large, fast-moving and complex operation. And the culture is fun too. It’s great to learn and challenge yourself in a different environment and the support I’ve had from Costa is great.”
